“A cedar roof is a living, breathing thing and must be maintained to ensure longevity”

History

Greg has always had a passion for beautiful homes, both rustic and modern architecture, and the cedar roof was always a key feature. He noticed the natural beauty of the wood roofs faded too quickly, and that they were being replaced too soon... He developed his proven methods of restoration and 45+ years later, he is applying the same techniques and working on the same roofs he started restoring when he started. Now his son has joined him, but the mission remains the same… Create value for our customers from new cedar installation, to restoration and regular maintenance.

About Cedar Roofs & Why Maintain?

A cedar roof will outlast an asphalt roof many times over if properly treated and maintained. Every 6 - 10 years, cedar should be spray-treated to put back the natural oils Michigan’s particularly high humidity, hot sun and harsh winters draw out of the wood.

As cedar loses its oils, the tendency to crack, curl and collect moss is highly probable. When this happens, the water will slowly deteriorate the condition of the cedar, and will eventually affect the rafters and roof boards.

In addition, cedar wood should be oiled because it is a soft wood and very porous. Typically, the reason these oils are so important is because cedar roofs in Michigan are constantly going from a damp, saturated condition to a dry condition every rainfall. Without the natural oils in the wood to displace the water and bond the grains of the wood together, the wood will crack and split and possibly create leaking problems. The cost of replacing a cedar roof is very expensive.
